Maasai Mara
Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of the most famous and best places of destination for safaris. It is undoubtedly that in the mind’s eye of many, they have a picture that makes them see Africa as a single acacia tree silhouetted on savanna land against a flame of red horizon, that stretches towards one’s eyes infinity. Let us do the timing, and that classic image will become real from the Maasai Mara, Kenya’s most famous nature reserve. The reserve covers an area of approximately 583 square miles of preserved wilderness in southwestern Kenya along the Tanzanian border. It is made up of grassy plains and awesomely rolling hills, traversed by the Mara and Talek rivers. The name Mara, as it is called locally, derives from the ancestral inhabitants Maasai people, who migrated from the Nile Basin.
Among the wildlife residing in Mara includes the big five (lion, elephant, leopard, black rhino, buffalo), cheetah, zebra, hippo, wildebeest, and several bird species. It is at this reserve that the wildebeests cross the Mara River during the annual wildebeest migration in search of pasture, in one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth, named the eighth wonder of the world. Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park is the second most visited park in Kenya after the Masai Mara. It is famous for its scenery with a backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, which dominates the landscape, and open plains known for its spectacular herds of elephants. Here, you will spot the stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, just across the border in Tanzania. Large herds of big tusked elephants roam the plains in the morning and evening. Also, have an opportunity to see hyena, Giraffe, hippo, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and occasionally lions and wild dogs.
The basin at the centre of Amboseli floods lures throngs of wildlife and provide ample opportunity for eager shutterbugs during the heavy rains. In 1991, Conservationists declared Amboseli a UNESCO-Mab Biosphere Reserve, a step that ensured biodiversity conservation within the park. Additionally, it aided the involvement of the local population in conservation.
Tsavo East National Park
It is the Kenya’s largest national park by far, covering an area of 4,535 square-mile. The park is renowned for its large numbers of elephants and the famous man-eating lions. It is characterized by flat, dry terrain patterned with huge baobab trees, which lends itself well to spotting the Big Five. All safaris in Tsavo East take place south of the Galana River, an area vast enough to often make feel yourself completely alone adventuring. The Voi and Galana rivers traverse the park and the Aruba Dam, built across the Voi River, lures scores of birds.
Another interesting feature of the park is the 180-mile long Yatta Plateau. It is one of the world’s longest lava flows, running parallel to Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. Samburu National Reserve
Located in far north of the country, through cultivations of sisal and pineapple to the Northern Frontier District, you’ll find the remote Samburu National Reserve. Samburu’s little desert safari surprises you with worldwide wonders like Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich, Elephants, Lions, and Cheetahs. Samburu is uncrowded and offers excellent game-viewing amidst a stunning mix of hilly landscapes, riverine bush, and semi-desert terrain. There are few to almost no game vehicles with you around here, compared to other reserves and parks, but you will be privy to spot the striking background view of the Mathew’s Range, kopjes (small hills), and enormous rocky outcrops centered around the gently flowing Ewaso Nyiro river that traverses this Park, providing evergreen vegetation for the rare gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe.
Have a glimpse the red-robed Samburu tribesmen who resemble their Masai relatives, bringing cattle to the river to drink. Just like Maasais, the Samburu live in manyattas (villages) that can be moved as they follow the grazing patterns of their livestock. This is also one of few places in Africa where you might spot a camel plodding along the arid plains.
Lake Naivasha & Surroundings
A freshwater lake located in Nakuru County, about an hour and a half drive north of Nairobi. Lake Naivasha is known for its yellow-barked acacia trees, an abundance of hippos, and over 400 species of birds including the flamingos, pelicans, herons, egrets, and kingfisher.
The Lake is skirted by grassy banks habiting a rich flora around the sparkling blue lake. This occurrence attracts different wildlife who come here to forage, including the giraffes, zebras, buffalos, antelopes, warthog, and monkeys. It is not the lake only that makes Naivasha a destination though. You will spot game around the lake and have an opportunity to enjoy tea in the garden at Elsamere, the former home of Born Free author Joy Adamson.
